CLASS DESCRIPTION

I like to make animals to go with my dolls that create a little story for them. The fish on wheels is made to put a doll on top but it makes a great piece on his own as well. For the painting you can use any colour you like. The fish has wheels to make it less serious.

The material used for the fish is sawdust mass (a kind of papier maché) that is not available in the US. That is why I strongly recommend ordering the material kit. An alternative would be Celluclay.

The size of the fish is 16 inches long and 15 inches high. You can easily make a smaller fish by cutting the base form smaller.

Making this fish yourself is an adventurous project and I will guide you step by step.

The class will flow as follows:

Class 1: The cutting of the styrofoam baseform and adding the first layer of sawdust mass
Class 2: The placing of the eyes and the construction of the tail and fins.
Week off for drying & Easter vacation
Class 3: Sculpting details and decoration
Class 4 : The painting.

Marlaine Verhelst Kit Fee: THERE ARE NO MORE KITS AVAILABLE

Marlaine Verhelst

Marlaine Verhelst       Marlaine Verhelst: doll artist and teacher for over 25 years and NIADA member since 1999. Making dolls and animals is still fun and so is teaching! I live in The Netherlands and I use to travel a lot in the US for exhibitions and teaching. In the meantime I have met a lot of cloth doll makers and I am very impressed by their creativity and the way they are organised.

People kept asking me to come over to the USA to teach animal making but that would keep me at least four weeks from home (because of the drying time) and that is impossible. Then the idea of an online class was born. So here I am and I am excited to see how it will work.

My work has been published in magazines and books all over the world (in the USA in Susan Oroyans 'Finishing the Figure'), I am an author of several 'How to ..'books, I have just finished a CD-Rom on handsculpting into porcelain (text, illustrations and video) and I am the organiser of a yearly doll holiday and workshop week in Paris (France).
